Nutrients to improve male fertility

Nutrients to improve male fertility

Male fertility rates are rapidly declining. In 1940 the average male at a sperm count of 113 million/ ml of semen. Today a count of 20 million/ ml is considered normal!! Although counts above 40 million/ ml have better pregnancy rates.

Sperm morphology (which is essentially how many normal shaped sperm there are per sample), have dropped from a normal level of 40% to just 4% considered normal! Once again, a very scary statistic

Thankfully we also have some wonderful nutrients to support men’s fertility

Importance of Preconception Care

Importance of Preconception Care

The preconception period is one the most important stages of your future baby’s health as both parents are setting up their baby’s DNA for life. Essentially inside an egg and sperm cell is the DNA or we could think of as blueprint, that will be joined together to create your baby. Dietary and lifestyle choices during the preconception period can influence this DNA for better, or worse.

Root causes of Anxiety

Root causes of Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health disorders and it is estimated up to 33.7% of the population will be affected by an anxiety disorder in their life. Anxiety however can just be a symptom of another underlying condition within your body. Your anxiety may just be sending you a message to look a little further rather than trying to mask the feeling through medications, foods, alcohol, drugs or isolation. Below I have discussed some of the common root causes of anxiety.

Endometriosis: a misunderstood women's health condition

Endometriosis: a misunderstood women's health condition

Endometriosis is so much more than just heavy and painful periods. It is a condition in which endometrial tissue (that should be lining the uterus) grows outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, bowel, pelvic ligaments, bladder and endometrial tissue has even been found in patient’s lungs. Because oestrogen promotes the growth of endometrial tissue, symptoms will often fluctuate within a women’s menstrual cycle, however, it is important to notes oestrogen is not the cause, it just aggravates and drives the condition.

Do's and Dont's of Probiotic Use

Do's and Dont's of Probiotic Use

Do you take a daily probiotic? Or you have been told that you should for good general health? While I often prescribe probiotics to may patients, it is important to know that not everyone needs a probiotic and that there are different types of probiotic strains that do different jobs in the body, so you should always know where your probiotic is from and what job you want it to do. To help, this is my little guide to the do's and dont's of probiotic use.

The 5 PMS Types

The 5 PMS Types

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterised by a collection of symptoms that occur in the days leading up to, and including a female’s menstruation period. For some women this can be as long as 14 days from ovulation to menses. The media and our world has created this idea that PMS is normal and that women become "crazy at that time of the month'. Yes some light cramps on the first day of your period or feeling a little teary the day before, is normal. Your uterus is contracting and you're experiencing a dip in hormones at this time, which is going to have an effect on you! It is when these symptoms start to impact your life negatively such as days off work, use of pain medication monthly, and mood issues affecting your daily function for days on end that these symptoms need to be addressed.

Welcome to The Healing Point Margaret River

To readers, viewers and curious peeps,

For as long as I can remember, I have always had an interest in medicine, health and the human body. My humble beginnings were crushing up plants in my backyard and applying all sorts of crushed up 'medicine' to my dog and cats. My interest in the human body intensified in high school as a human biology student, which finally lead me to study naturopathy at a university level, combing my passions for health, medicine and the human body.
